The National Post (one of two "national" newspapers in Canada), has a lead
article on page 1, titled "Breast-feeding (sic) is OK until age seven:
anthropologist". There are three paragraphs on page one and then the story
continues on page 17. There are two more articles, one devoted to Kathy
Dettwyler's research, called "Researcher looks to primates", a full column.
The rest of the page (the whole page is devoted to this issue), is an
article (two full columns and a little more, plus a very large photo (more
than two columns wide and almost 3/4 of the page high) of a 1 year old (more
or less) at the breast, with the breast very much in evidence and *even* the
areola.

The three articles are very positive, and one includes some quotes from me
as well.

This case may have some positive fallout. Somewhat bizarre though, is that
I got a story from a newspaper in the US that says that the judge decided
today that this was not abuse, but the child was still not returned to the
family.

Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC
