Yes, one would want the very best formula for an infant that has to have
formula. But one first must wonder why it has taken a number of years for
the FDA to approve DHA as GRAS. (approval is still pending) The reason for
the length of time is because independent studies show that rats have a few
little problems with ingesting this substance. Now, the following patent
shows you that the DHA is extracted from
dinoflagellates. If you go to the body of the patent, this oil is extracted
by the use of solvents--hexane. Does everyone know what hexane is? It's a
petroleum product. Yes, lets feed this product to babies--pre-term at that!
And we wonder why we have an oil crisis...(this is not even considering
genetic engineering that is a possibility that they mention in some of their
other patents) Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC

United States Patent 5,407,957
Kyle , et al. April 18, 1995
Production of docosahexaenoic acid by dinoflagellates
Abstract
This invention relates to a process for producing a single cell edible oil
containing DHA, to the oil itself and to uses for the oil. Marine
microorganisms are cultivated in fermentors and induced to produce the single
cell oil which subsequently is recovered by extraction with solvents.
