When I was hosp LC I thought it very important to get mom of baby in NICU
pumping ASAP, using breast massage before trying to pump (within 1st 12
hours after baby's birth.) "healthy" FT baby - if baby not latching or
nursing after 1st 24 hours I think they need to pump whenever baby is fed
otherwise (Syring, tube, cup etc.) The breasts need to know that there IS
a baby here who is going to need lots of milk as soon as baby figures out
what s/he is supposed to do. Plus you can give baby whatever mom gets. I
think taste and smell of breast milk is a very important part of the
learning curve. Sincerely, Pat in SNJ
