Whoa there, I have to get on board here.  One of the two major review
mags that I read is British (IRR) and at the end of each issue is a
feature called "Too Many Records." in which a critic is usually pictured
in front of an enormous cd collection.  It's not just an American thing.
Furthermore, if you think that Americans consume classical music like we
consume other goods, you have obviously never been here.  I work in the
largest classical department available in a very large American city.
During my shift last night (8 hours) I sold exactly 6 cds to three
customers.  I don't think that the American public is beating down the door
to get the latest Ludwig van.  I dare say that many critics are writing for
an international audience and are not appealing to consumerism at all.
