Protein sources are more likely to trigger allergenic responses than food
sources low in protein. Cow milk is usually the #1 culprit on most lists,
with soy protein close behind.

Exclusive breastfeeding for about six months fosters infant gut closure, so
that any food introduced later is less likely to trigger an allergic
response. For the formula fed baby, it's rather moot since the baby is given
a potent allergen right from the start. "Which solids are added when" has
more to do with balancing the nutrients than avoiding allergens.

With breastfed babies, some nutrition experts are now advising NOT to
concentrate on carbohydrates (cereals) as early family foods, but to head
for the protein sources sooner. The idea is that adding cereals and fruit to
the already-high-in-carbohydrate human milk could theoretically create a
relative protein deficiency. LLLI has published good advice on this subject
for 40+ years - start with a fruit for the sweet taste, then add family
meats.

My sister-in-law claims to be allergic to lettuce and most vegetables, but
can drink lots of milk and eat chocolate without trouble. Can you guess why
I have trouble swallowing this story? (no pun intended
