I'm an RN. I work in a large OB-GYN office. We are supposed to be baby-
friendly. No formula in the office, we encourage all pregnant and new moms to
nurse. Good right?

There are 5 nurses in my office plus me and 2 prns who do phone triage. The 5
full time nurses are older. They have grown kids. My point here is they are old
school. Breastfeeding is nice but not that big of a deal. They routinely tell
pts. to schedule feeds, put the baby in the crib if he's crying; he needs to
learn you can't hold him all the time, etc. I asked the lactation nurse who
works in our office what the policy was. She said, "you know we don't advocate
timed feedings." I asked her to do an in-service. She said ok but nothing has
come of it. The LC is leaving soon, for personal reasons.

Yesterday, I tried to educate them. They were less than open- minded. I got
responses like, "Well if breastmilk is so good, why are your kids sick so much"
and "breastfeeding all the time is too time consuming, how will you get
anything else done?" Another woman in the office was in the room for this
conversation, she's pregnant. She bottle fed her now 7 year old. The
conversation prompted her to decide breastfeeding is too much trouble.

Advice? If the nurses don't really support breast feeding, how can they help
the pts.?
