[Randol Schoenberg forwarded a copy of a letter to the UCLA regents
concerning the arbitrary renaming of the Schoenberg Hall at that
university]
Renaming the original dedication seems to have become a la mode. After
all, if they rent you your grave for 30 years (as they do in many parts of
the world) can we protest if the Gewandhaus becomes the Levi-Strauss or if
the Mexico City Salon Mercedes becomes Salon Mercedes Benz?
I am just waiting for commercialisation to arrive at Covent Garden when the
Arts Council finally gives up. Will it become the Elizabeth Arden (Centre
for Performing Arts and Pancake?)
Take heart - as everybody knows - Arnold Schoenberg's name will still be
known long after the rest of us, including sponsors, are forgotten. At
least Esterhazy and Razumovsky had the right idea on longevity...
