Opinions have been divided. Many have reacted strongly negatively, many
strongly positively. The opinion you'll hear most often (and it's pretty
close to mine) is: orchestra very good, chamber-music approach fresh and
at times exciting, chorus solid, soloists erratic and at times a problem.
The performances usually aren't at the level of Koopman, Suzuki, and
Herreweghe, but they're by no means to be dismissed. Because they're so
cheap, I think they could make a very good introduction to the cantatas.
One could graduate from there to the top HIP versions, or even Rilling's
older set.
