On the 4th edition of lebrecht.live, Wednesday 25 October, 1900 GMT, 2000
CET, 1400 EST), I shall be asking:

WHO RUNS THE ARTS? AND ARE THEY UP TO THE JOB?

What are the qualities required to manage an opera house, arts centre,
ballet company or national gallery?
Who gets picked, and how?
Is it better to have an artist or a businessman at the helm?
And who should appoint them?

Here is the current state of play:

- The Metropolitan Opera, New York, is run by a former stage carpenter.
- The Vienna State Opera is managed by a former artists' agent.
- The Kirov Opera and Ballet, St Petersburg, are headed by their chief
   conductor.
- The Tate is run by a former Arts Council official
- The London Symphony Orchestra is managed by a retired cellist.
- The two main opera houses in Berlin are headed by a composer.
- The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, is headless again.

Who would you like to see in charge of the arts? Come pit your wits against
some of the world's top administrators - successes and failures - on the
next lebrecht.live.
