When I mentioned Eric Ziesl (1905-1959) in a previous post, Mimi was kind
enough to direct me to some of his other work. I found a cut out disc on
Harmonia Mundi (HUM 907044) of his chamber music. Inside the booklet are
copies of letters to the likes of Schoenberg, Stravinsky and Milhaud from
or about Ziesl. They come from the collection of the composer's daughter
Barbara Ziesl Schoenberg.

I particularly like the Piano Trio Suite in b minor, a youthful piece.
It starts with a Praeladium and concludes with a Theme and Variations that,
to me are worthy of Regar at least (though not Germanic except in form).
In between, providing contrast, are a nice yearning adagio and a wistful
Allegretto Scherzando. His melodic skill is very evident in both the
Scherando and the fourth movement theme. Apparently this piece was lost
and was only discovered twenty years after his death.

The disc also contains his Second String Quartet and his last piece a trio
for harp, viola and flute.

Well worth hearing.
