In Anne Fadiman's book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down she talks
about the Hmong mother who delivered most of her (14) children herself,
unassisted, at night, while her older kids slept in the other room.
OK, I'm ready to say I want more health-care provision than she had! But
there's an extreme of consumer control of birth...
(her only baby with problems was the one the book focuses on, #13, born in a
hospital in California...)
