My impression-from the Left Bank of the Atlantic-is that the Barber
concerto of 1962 has been for some decades a repertoire piece. I was
at the deuxieme, in Boston, and am not in the least surprised that this
happened.
I can't even guess what else might come close; the musical importance and
stature of the Carter is widely recognized, but its incredible difficulty
keeps it from being played with any regularity.
I should think the same is true of the Henze concerti.
Among works by younger Americans, the Corigliano piano concerto has been
around for a long time but rarely turns up.
Any other ideas?
