Dear List,
I am a La Leche League Leader. A mom (G5) contacted me regarding her milk
supply concerns. Her 4 wk. old boy seems to be slow at gaining weight. She
"lost her milk" with her previous child when the baby was about 5 mo. old,
and is nervous.
She takes Albuterol MDI (17 g./200 measured inhalations) about 3-4x/day.
Baby weighs about 8 lbs. now. She says that he's fussy and cries a lot.
Baby's latch is fine; mom's not sore. Mom hydrates to thirst, but admits to
awakening at night with incredibly dry mouth. (I suggested putting water by
her bed.)
I saw the baby last night at my meeting, and his skin around his forehead
and legs looks wrinkled. He's got about 4 soaking wet single-use diapers
per day, (measured against a "test" diaper with 1/4 cup of water in it) but
also 4-5 stools. They're green, small amount. Baby doesn't seem to be
teething.
Queries:
1. Does Albuterol MDI cause low milk supply and poor weight gain?
2. If so, is there an alternative? (I checked archives. Not too much
there.)
I told Mom to check with a local L.C. just for her own peace of mind, but I
have to say that that wrinkled skin, slow gain, mom's history and baby's
irritability all make me concerned.
TIA for the help.
