Hi all, ILCA was great fun, what a wonderful group of fabulously interesting
women! I was amazed at every turn! I was especially impressed with the
opening day talk delivered by Bobbie Phillips(?)MD who chronicled her
hospitals journey to baby friendly. Being from the area, I can especially
appreciate the distance travelled by this Boston inner city hospital, in what
appeared to be a relatively short amount of time. The overwhelming majority
of these poor, minority women leave this hospital nursing- this is huge!
Their article will be coming to press in JHL soon.
Their was also a paper presented by a Swedish researcher on the destruction
of cancer cells by human milk, very cutting edge but very scientific, what
was most interesting were the anecdotal reports during the Q&A of people
drinking br. milk and being cured of their late stage cancers.
The Whittlestone pump is an up to date version of a "milking" type pump
developed in New Zealand and used in the 60s-?, there. The presentation of
the pump was very well done with a beautiful booth with breastfeeding art,
nice marketing materials, plenty of sales reps-some LCs with extensive
backgrounds. The pump itself is very different, similar in scale but the
mechanism involves very little suction and mostly a twisting, pulling,
milking action. Instead of a funnel type shape for the breasts to sit in,
they lay against a solid surface-soft , with a hole for the nipples only. It
looked to me like it could present some cleaning challenges as the material
surrounding the breasts seemed more porous and convoluted then current pumps.
Oh well, hope this helps to give a little sense of the ILCA flavor- wish I
could have met up with more of you fellow lactnetters!!
