Dear Lactnetters-
    Is there such a thing as lack of oxytocin receptors?  I am working with a
mom who was induced with prostaglandin gel twice and with pitocin twice.  She
never contracted.  Even 3 weeks post dates, she had no contractions
whatsoever.  Finally, her baby was born by Cesarean section.
    Breastfeeding went very well for the first two days, then her baby became
frustrated at the breast.  Mom began pumping to build her supply.  When she
pumps, there is an initial "squirt" of milk from milk in the sinuses?), then
nothing but drops for the remainder of each 15 minute session. Pumping is not
increasing her supply.
    While uterine oxytocin receptors increase at the very end of pregnancy
(usually), oxytocin receptors usually increase gradually in the breasts
throughout pregnancy.  Is it possible that this mother is lacking receptor
cells?  Has this been documented?  I have checked Lawrence and Riordan &
Auerbach and not found anything similar.  How about you?
