Opera America has published statistics the season just ended, and found
that the number of North American works performed by professional companies
increased to 60, against 34 a decade ago.
The question: What were the most frequently performed American works
in 1999-2000? No. 1, of course, is "Porgy & Bess." No. 5 seems like a
trick, although technically it is "American" -- it's that West Coast
Yankee Stravinsky's "The Rake's Progress." So, name #2, 3, 4, and 6.
(The modestly heartening figures also show over 100 North American operas
premiered in the past decade, 37 (!) getting subsequent productions, thank
you, John Adams! Almost half of the new works were introduced by companies
with budgets under $1 million, only 25% by companies with top budgets,
meaning over $7.5 million.)
