There is some atonal music which moves me as deeply as any music of any
kind - I don't think I'm being deceived about my own emotions. I can't
of course prove to myself that I'm not deranged (any more than I can prove
I'm not a brain in a vat) but people treat me as if I'm normal. My musical
tastes may be eccentric but fortunately the British have a great tolerance
of eccentricity. Why this should be I don't know (maybe analysis of my
Satz number will shed light on it). I wouldn't be very bothered if no one
else felt the same way though I know that others do. I do wonder whether
atonal music is like some kinds of architecture which only look good if
the proportions are just right - unless it is done very well it fails
completely.
