JUNE/JULY on Classical Music on the Web (UK) www.musicweb.uk.net

Two new biographies have been added for Cedric Thorpe Davie and Philip
Wood. Marc Bridle has interviewed Benjamin Schmid and Adriano has updated
the complete Respighi discography. Links to these can be found from
"What's New". Seen&Heard has been as active as usual wit nearly 30 concert
reviews. Marc Bridle has been particularly busy whilst Peter Woolf has
been attending events overseas. Marc twice heard Haitink perform
Shostakovich 8 - I think to confirm that he was right the first time.
Sep[arate reviews were posted.

CD Reviews
We trailed Christopher Cook's review of Marina Tafur singing Songs from
Latin America which has just appeared in the July edition of International
Record Review. In return, Tony Duggan has two Mahler reviews in the
magazine. You may win a subscription to IRR in our competition.

Tony has also completed his survey of the Mahler Symphonies on record with
a discussion of recordings of the 10th. Next month he will round off with
the Mahler Song Cycles -but we are not letting him go so, after a short
rest, he will embark upon another large scale project.

The CD reviews for July have been added to the site more or less daily
throughout June reaching a total of 140 so they cannot all be listed here.
Marc Bridle surveyed recordings of Salome, Peter Woolf of Ockeghem and Tony
Duggan listened to the Vox Horenstein re-releases. Peter also listened to
various releases by the Canadian Arion Ensemble (which reminds me, if you
do not already know it, do pay a visit to the Canadian web-site La Scena
Musicale http://www.scena.org/index-en.asp which is thoroughly
enterprising).

We reviewed rather a lot of Bach but I would also draw your attention to
the following: Barber Symphony 1 on Naxos, Gunther Wand in Debussy and
Mussorgsky, Jane Erb enthusing about Passatori, a jazzy Kapustin, the
latest Lowri Blake release, Peter Woolf enthusing about two Ohana discs,
Ian Lace back-cataloguing for the Rachmaninov Vespers, Rob Barnett
welcoming the Berglund Shostakovich 7 & 11 back in the lists, Gerald
Fenech on a few of the Taverner re-releases. The records of the month
are Ockeghem, Bostock's Elgar and Angela Gheorghiu the Verdi heroine.

Looking forward to next month in addition to the new releases I am
highlighting a disc recorded about a decade ago of songs for quartet and
baritone including Walford Davies' "Prospice" This disc is so special it
must not be allowed to languish unforgotten. A review by Lewis Foreman
will appear in the next day or so.

Finally, we are increasing the number of Jazz reviews which have appeared
sporadically in Curio Corner. I have created a separate section to which
our existing reviews will be added plus about 20 new reviews during July.

APPEAL: An assistant web-master is required to assist with this expanding
web site. It is hoped this person could take over the management of 'Film
Music on the Web' liasing with Editor Ian lace. The responsibility would
be to receive the reviews in a Word document and prepare them for the site
complete with scrolling and individual scripts. This takes about 15 hours
spread over a week. If you are interested in this honorary position please
e-mail len at [log in to unmask]

Happy Listening.
