Last weekend, at the Midwest Archeological Conference held in East
Lansing, Michigan, Charles E. Cleland was given his official farewell
from teaching at Michigan State University. Having been on the
faculty since 1965, Chuck guided the academic careers of an impressive
number of students--many of whom have subsequently made their marks in
historical archaeology. Among the latter are two past presidents of
the SHA and more than a half dozen board members. Indeed, there has
been one or more of his students on the SHA board every year since
     1990.

Chuck plans to continue his research and writing, and no doubt he will
also continue attending SHA and other professional meetings on a
regular basis. Those of you who are among his many friends, however,
may wish to send him a note in observance of this transition.

Many of you may also be interested to know that the MSU Department of
Anthropology announced on Saturday that Cleland's position is to be
retained on the faculty. They are now initiating a search for a Great
Lakes region archaeologist, either a prehistorian or historical
archaeologist (the ideal candidate would have competency in both
periods straddling the Contact Era). The appointment will be in a
tenure-stream position at the Assistant Professor level; Ph.D.
required. The application period is open till Dec 15, and interviews
will be conducted at the American Anthropological Association meetings.

Contact the chair of the selection committee, Dr. William A. Lovis, at
<[log in to unmask]> for more information. He can also be reached by
phone at 517.355.3485. Failing contact, try the main departmental
     office at 517.353.2950.
