Last night, I made a point of the exclusive maleness of the Moscow
Virtuosi, and somebody from the sponsoring San Francisco Performances
organization put the question to the tour manager.  His reply:

   "It's tradition. Women cause too many problems."

When you put it that way, there is a certain logic to it.  There is never
any problem in men-only organizations, historically.  Indeed, are women
ready to play music on a professional level?

But I suspect there is a slight misquote here; the man must have said:
"Is tradition."
