just to add to winnie's story about early solids, i sometimes like to foment
a little agitation by pointing out that in 1954, for instance (the year i was
born, okay, so i'm not a baby anymore), more babies were fed formula than
breastfed. of the babies fed formula, half were fed homemade formula
(condensed milk and other stuff). i can hardly imagine which was worse, the
commercial stuff or the homemade stuff. although it certainly causes all the
problems we know about already, i often wonder whether early introduction of
some solids that contained reasonable amounts of vitamins etc. might not have
greatly improved the diets of formula fed babies.

my mother breastfed for three months, despite lots of misinformation. when
she gets embarrassed about this short time period (having become, wonder why?
a terrific supporter of breastfeeding) i just remind her that she did great
even compared to today's statistics, sad to say.

so bring on the egg yolks, baby orange juice, and cod liver oil (yikes!).

carol brussel IBCLC, ready to snack on solid easter foods (mostly the
chocolate variety) all day
