Any baby with suspected anomalies should be referred to a geneticist.
THey are the people with the expertise to correctly diagnose this kind of
stuff. Many of these kids have internal issues as well, such as renal
and cardiac implications. Many kids with anomalies of the external ear
have renal issues as well. The geneticist will also be able to
refer/direct the family to appropriate support if there is a problem,
which there certainly seems to be. We are very lucky to have a great
genetics team here at University of Connecticut and I am constantly
amazed at the knowledge and compassion these people possess. THey are
not only able to recognize even the very obscure syndromes, but they
deliver the often devestating news in a gentle, compassionate and
supportive manner, refering the families to services as needed.
