I'd like to respectfully agree and disagree with Chris's reply to
Kathy's question. I do agree that limiting suckling time does not
prevent sore nipples, it only delays it, as Chris very correctly
points out. The landmark study on that was DeCarvalho; the others
that Chris lists are related to the topic, but not as strong in
backing up this point about "delaying" the soreness.

I'd like to point out, however, that this doesn't entirely answer
Chris's question, which is: "Is it true or false that sore nipples
are created by negative pressure?" The answer is yes. The best
reference to back that up is by Mavis Gunther, who did a study on the
topic in 1945.

With the help of my husband, who is an engineer, I've tried hard to
explain the physics behind this phenomenon in a my new self-learning
module. There's a difference between "high" negative pressure, and
unrelieved negative pressure, and so I'd urge everyone not to jump to
conclusions about length of suckling time when discussing negative
pressure.

Let me hasten to say, however, before someone out there goes berserk,
I'm not suggesting that we go back to recommending 2 minutes today
and 3 minutes tomorrow!
