I would say go for any of the Bruno Walter recordings of this work--the
vitality of the performances well compensate for the problems with the
sonics!

For a good Mahler 3 shell out the bucks for Kubelik.  Horenstein, Neumann,
and Abravanel are also worth a gander, as are the first two movements of
Levine.  Haitink (Concertgebouw) leaves me cold, although Maureen Forrester
is well worth hearing.
