I have bitten my tongue (or with email is it fingers?) over this small
procedural issue but I feel I need to say something today.
Can people with artifact queries please not send images as attachments. Not
everyone is on a cable connection and in this world of slow unstable
landline connections a big image can block email for quite some time. Most
people have access to some sort of web space for posting (for free web-based
posting space go to Photopoint.com) and a posted image can be perused by the
curious at their convenience without inconvenience to the whole list.
Thanks
Phil

Subject: Ceramic ID

I would appreciate comments on the identification (function) of the
following ceramic. This includes a lead glaze (green) redware
ceramic our firm recovered from an urban site in Pittsburgh, PA
(see attached jpeg files - plan and profile views). It was collected
from a privy/well probably dating to circa 1800-1830.

The ceramic is glazed on the interior and exterior and contains two
conjoined vessels attached in the center by a strap handle. Each
jar measures 5 1/2 inches in height, 4 inches in width (top), and 3
1/2 inches at the base. Wear along the rim suggests that they
may have had lids. No other obvious attributes or markings are
present.

What is it? We have kicked around several ideas, but wanted to
get the benefit of everyone's experience.

Thanks in advance.
