My fantasy Haydn symphony CD contains Nos 60, 71 and 103, and is played by
the Haydn Sinfonietta, Vienna conducted by Manfred Huss. Their Koch CDs of
his overtures are what I think HIP should be and most of all, they are as
exciting and exhilarating as you could wish. With a name like that for an
orchestra, there should be some symphonies in the pipeline, or even
released - I haven't checked Koch's web site for a while.

There is something odd about No 71. The only version I've ever heard
is the Dorati one from the complete set. I'm relying on memory here as
I don't own it, and I write as one who knows nothing about relationships
between keys, relative minors and so on. The last movement goes into a key
which sounds, for want of a better word, experimental, and the effect is
quite unsettling. Comments?

This is my final post before Christmas when I plan to hear at least the
sublime final chorus from Bach's Christmas Oratorio. My best wishes to
everyone from warm and sunny Australia for a safe and happy time.
