Maybe not quite in the same class, but George Anthiel was co-inventor (With
Hedy Lamarr! Honest, you could look it up!) of a cryptographic scheme in
1941 designed to foil jamming of torpedo guidance systems. The idea was
the basis for frequency-hopped spread-spectrum systems which have since
become part of net privacy technology.
