Incidents of violence in public places and schools has caused us to look at the procedures we have in place to adequately provide a safe environment for our guest, school groups, campers and staff. Recently we had an officer from the Orlando Police Department visit our facility to discuss how we should react if there is an active shooter in the building. The officer was also a participant, along with other SWAT, police officers, firefighters, FBI agents and deputies in one of the largest active shooter drills in the state of Florida. He provided us with a DVD to review titled “Shots Fired – When Lightning Strikes” which details an incident and how to react. He also strongly suggested that we develop a Critical Incident Plan which should be incorporated and used in the event of such an occurrence. Has anyone developed a Critical Incident Plan for their museum? If so, we (Orlando Science Center) would like to see if it has information we could incorporate in the plan we are trying to create.
