We do a much simpler version using 2 litre pop bottles. There is an entire activity write-up on the ZOOM website too at www.pbs.org/zoom. It's called Biodome. We've done it for several years in our summer camp program and it is always a successful experience for the kids. It does, however, only use plants. We've had discussions with the students about changing different variables and one that always comes up is: "Could you put a fish in the bottom?". We've never tried it so I don't know. It's a good opportunity to experiment though.
There is also a book called Bottle Biology by Mrill Ingram that contains a lot of variations on the same theme, including creating your own mini ecosystem. It's a great resource. If you would like any more info, feel free to email me off list.

I was in the British Natural History Museum in London last week, a terrific place by
the way, and saw a bottle with self-sustaining life in it. I think it was called a
biosphere and was thought up by NASA. Two sizes of bottles were available. Does
anyone know how to order these? Where would I get them in the U.S.?
