The beauty of open-ended is that it allows everyone to work in their
preferred intelligences. Multiple intelligences isn't as simple as thinking
in only one of the seven (or more) defined intelligences. Everyone has a
particular mix of intelligence types - and they can use them in an
open-ended experience. 

And, yes, I can see someone humming along or creating a jingle while solving
a problem posed at an open-ended exhibit.

Can you suggest any non open-ended exhibit that encourages all of the
multiple intelligences? I've got a six pack that says you can't. Most
exhibits appeal to only one or at most two intelligence types, which is half
of the reason that most exhibits don't work with visitors.

The other beauty of open-ended is that visitors do science instead of
science education. Science - the open-ended investigation - is fun. Science
education - the typical format used in museums - isn't fun. It's the
difference between a museum of teaching and a museum of learning.  This has
been the mantra of Science North for two decades: "Do science, not science
education." And, they are right.
