Evan,

Our centre occasionally runs training and support workshops for small
regional museums ( i.e. they have limited technical skills, no paid
staff, and access to old equipment). Many of these have wanted to find
ways to have simple (and often interactive) ways to provide some
additional information, images etc to support their other
exhibits/displays.

We have found that giving them some pointers on how to get the most out
of PowerPoint has allowed them to develop and adjust simple information
systems. Simple to use, more powerful than most people need, and has
lots of support or training info available.

If PowerPoint ( or open office's version) doesn't provide enough
flexibility, then you're probably going to need a full media development
app such as Adobe Director or similar full strength products that have
the usual pros and cons, and learning curves.

For non-interactive info displays we have helped them gain experience in
using digital picture frames. Cheap and good for a range of looped
media/info.

Anyone have recommendations for inexpensive or open-source software than
can be used to turn ordinary Windows PCs into simple information kiosks?
