We too are able to get dry ice at some (not all) grocery stores in the Springfield MO area. It's kept in a separate freezer--generally near the front of the store. (Here in the land of tornadoes, ice storms and various weather related power outages, dry ice comes in handy for storing perishable food items!) When we're doing single programs, we buy the block of dry ice--generally it's 5 lb. blocks, but we've been known to go dry ice diving for a smaller piece if we don't need much! For larger events, or multi-day programs that require larger amounts of dry ice, we have a supplier that sells the dry ice in pellet form--we only use this option when we're purchasing 25 lbs. or more. Several years ago we investigated our dry ice options, and ended up investing in a dry ice insulated chest. When we have the larger amounts, we are able to store it in the chest and it lasts quite a while--up to a week (depending on the amount of dry ice stored.) It's non-electrical, well-insulated, and has been very effective in helping us keep dry ice on hand. Here's the link to the type of box we purchased: http://tomcoequipment.com/equipment/dry-ice-equipment/dry-ice-boxes.html

I've never heard of getting dry ice at the grocery store. I don't
believe any up this way sell it - what is it used for that would
inspire a grocery store to sell it? how is it sold?

We get it from a local outfit that makes it mostly for medical and lab
uses.
