Grocery and convenience stores here sell dry ice mainly for hunters and
fisherman. We purchase small blocks 1-10lbs depending on our need.

We had purchased a dry ice block maker but found that it produced only
snowy flakey blocks that evaporated quickly. In addition, in order to
make your own you have to have a siphon tank of CO2 around which you
would likely have to rent on a monthly basis from a compressed gas
provider in addition to the cost of the gas itself. For the amount and
frequency of our need the cost for making our own didn't add up.

When I was at the science center, we used to actually puchase blocks of
dry ice from an ice cream store - since they have their ice cream
shipped to them that way and use it for their deliveries as well, they
were usually willing to sell the dry ice to us. The nice thing is you
could always pick up a box of ice cream sandwiches at the same time if
you got the sweet tooth munchies! :)
