Hi Shane,

What a great idea!

When I worked at a science center I often thought our programs could benefit from public input beyond their attending, or not attending, our facility.

In my current position we've hosted several community advisory groups. The main bits of advice I can add are to have a project, or have the group come up with a project quickly for the group to work on, and to act on the advice that comes out of the group. Also pay attention to when and where the advisory group meets, Wednesdays at 10AM may be convenient for staff, but may not work so well for the community members. Lastly, it will likely take longer than you think it should for the group to come together and function as a group. The group may come together quickly, but be prepared to go for months wondering if this was a good idea, and for what it's worth I think it's a great idea.

Once the group gets established they can tell you better than I could how often they'd like to meet, and for how long the group would continue.
Good luck, and I'm looking forward to other ideas to come out of the group.

Hello, all. We've just started thinking about the pros and cons of
establishing one or both a Parent and/or Children's Advisory Committee,
to advise us on their perceptions, as end consumers, on everything we do
that they would be in a position to perceive, from marketing,
educational program choices, prices, exhibits, and more. Focus groups,
essentially.

Who has tried running these? What staff attended those meetings? Were
the committees productive? Did the attendees appreciate the chance to
contribute, and was the feedback helpful? What was an appropriate
frequency? Were there incentives to these attendees beyond a sense of
contributing to their friendly neighborhood science center? And...did
the committees last a long time, or do they only go for a while? In
other words, what were the best practices, and did these committees
prove useful?

Thank you for all comments!
