Others may make this point more delicately, but I'm struck by the recognition most of the Top 10 [insert profession here] that I've ever seen have toward people of color. Take a look at Time's 100 most influential people, for example. In that list you will find 'Hannah Montana' [aka Miley Cyrus], but not a single Native American scientist, political leader or entrepreneur. The existence of a list of non-white scientists on a science museum listserv isn't all that revolutionary and shouldn't be interpreted as a threat to all the great white men and white women in history, because I can guarantee you that children in this country will hear about them in school way before they hear that non-white scientists and engineers have also made a contribution.

The individuals David cites below are all well and good... Yet I was
struck by his disdain for dead white men - and dead white women.

Yeah, I guess if someone was white, they're of just ho-hum.

Look, encouraging diversity is an important goal, but trying to do it in
the wrong way just won't work, imho. And declaring that if someone lived
a long time ago and was white then they can't possibly be useful to
today's students is definitely the wrong way. Concede defeat to the
creationists, cause Darwin and Wallace were both DWM.

I cannot stress enough that nearly without exception one cannot randomly
combine a collection of circuitry and power supplies into an object and
"accidentally discover" that it is a fully functioning death ray. I
speak here from bitter experience.
