THE 2010 SMITH LEADERSHIP SYMPOSIUM Motivations, Interactions, and Impact:
Understanding Audience Experience 
Monday, November 8, 2010  
8:00 am–4:30 pm 
Not just for museums—this symposium explores how audience motivation and
engagement relate to diverse arts, science, and cultural experiences. Based
on ground-breaking research, this event examines why people visit museums
and how they benefit from those visits. Don’t miss this California based,
blended-learning (in-person and technologically provided) experience! 
LOCATIONS 
San Diego Natural History Museum 1788 El Prado, Balboa Park San Diego 
Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles  250 S. Grand Avenue, Los Angeles 
Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose  180 Woz Way,  San Jose 
PROGRAM Registration and breakfast begin at 8:00 am Broadcast live from San
Diego, convening locations in Los Angeles and San Jose will participate in
the symposium via interactive Web technology. Setting the Audience
Experience Stage Salvador Acevedo / President of Contemporánea Marketing
Communications Dr. John Falk / Sea Grant Professor in Free Choice Learning,
University of Oregon Nina Simon / Independent museum design, gaming, and
social media expert Evaluating the Balboa Park Experience Dr. Marianna Adams
of Audience Focus, Inc. and Balboa Park staff will debut preliminary
outcomes from a collaborative audience study focused on how visitors benefit
from museum experiences. Lunch provided After lunch, break-out sessions dig
deeper into the ideas presented in the morning and apply learning in the
galleries.
