Hey Jim,
At another museum that I worked at used local companies that distribute
tanks of different gases in our area (i.e. Nitrogen, Hydrogen tanks). Many
of these types of companies have to have dry ice to cool their tanks during
shipping (or so I was told). The local company we use is
http://www.airgas.com/. They mainly have it in pellet form which last
longer and works better during programs. The company policy is a minimum of
5 pounds when you purchase it. Since we did not need that much for programs
(only a shovel scoop or two), the company donated it each time. They said
they lost that much daily due to evaporation so it never bothered their
supply.

Grocery stores that have a fish market also have dry ice and most
Walmarts (they sale only in block form though).

A good storage container is the insolated boxes pet stores get when they
receive shipments of fish. Most of the pet stores throw them away so I was
able to get them for free. You can get many different sizes also. I've had
dry ice last a week in containers just sitting in my office. Don't go to
Petsmart. They are not thick enough. If I was traveling to a school and
picked up the dry ice the afternoon before or the day of, I would use a
Coleman cooler.

Good Luck!

Many of us do activities and demos with dry ice. My question is: How
many of you have a dry ice machine on site? If so, where did you get
it? Is it worth it or do you find it easier/cheaper to go to the
grocery store as needed?
