Hi Susan,

There is a program call VTS - Visual Thinking Stratgies, that was  
developed to understand works of art.
It has a lot of carry over to scientific observation.

Here are some of the references from their reserach - they did a lot  
of nice work at the Gardener Museum in Boston.
