Indeed, Mike speaks the truth.  The Franklin's latest continuous exhibit, Amazing Machine, features our automaton.  We had it restored and now run it for special demonstrations.  For visitors who are not able to catch a demonstration, we have an accompanying  video that shows it in motion.  Throughout the exhibit we combined historic artifacts and interactive devices, to great affect.

And Matt also speaks the truth, I used to work at the Historical Electronics Museum and they use some of the historical radio equipment in the collection for special occasions, like Pearl Harbor Day.

The question of whether or not to "consumptively use" artifacts in a collection is a hard one.  Artifact preservation is very important to many of our missions.  However, as those knowledgeable about how these artifacts work get older, artifact preservation must be balanced with knowledge preservation.
