Thanks for a great topic, Jonah.

My first time was Edmonton. I remember being awkward and unsure of what to
do at first (I'm talking about the ASTC conference), but then running into a
slightly older colleague from a museum in another state and thinking, "Wow.
I have a contact in this business not from my own museum." I got the sense
of community and meeting old friends right away. That's what has always
stuck with me about ASTC and why it's my favorite conference of the year.

Thinking about it now, my first time laid down annual conference patterns
that continue for me to this day. Back then, I remember sharing cocktails
with the President of my museum and he and I laughing about something we
thought was SO funny after the second or third round. Still happens. I also
remember standing next to the author of one of our field's essential books
in the bathroom and, for obvious reasons, debating whether I should say
something like, "I love your work." Still happens.

For me, the side conversations and meet ups in the hotel bar or lobby are
the most valuable times of the conference. I learn so much while having a
great time. Thanks ASTC for some fantastic times and a real education.
Thanks Jonah for opening up the memory banks. You always remember your first
time
