Hello all

Although this will be sent individually to those who have signed up or
expressed their intent on coming to our RAP, I thought I would post
this
here for those sitting on the fence about coming, there is still some
room available

Looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Wayne LaBar

This June is the ASTC RAP session, Exhibits and Expansion in the 21st
Century, at Liberty Science Center on June 10 - 11, 2004. We look
forward to an exciting exchange of ideas about what expansions are
telling us about exhibitions.

Title: Exhibits and Expansion in the 21st Century

Who Should Attend: Staff in ASTC organizations and members of NAME

Program: In recent years, the science center field has experienced an
increased amount of facility expansion. The trend continues, even
through economically challenging times, and a large part of the
renewal
energy is going into the development, design and implementation of new
exhibitry. At the same time, new philosophies of management,
technology
and mission have become part of our field. How do these philosophies
influence the way we think about exhibits and change our process for
planning expansions? How have they affected the "standards," or
"rules
of thumb," with which we developers and designers work during
expansion
and at other times?

In this interactive RAP, we will attempt to discuss and share the new
interplay of exhibit development, design and implementation with other
expansion efforts, such as architecture, construction, infrastructure,
facility closures, education, marketing and fund raising. Staff from
three institutions in the New Jersey/New York City area that are at
different phases in the expansion process will lead the discussions
and
share the most recent events and lessons from their processes. Chairs
include Wayne LaBar, VP of Exhibitions and Theaters at Liberty Science
Center; Paul Pearson, VP of Programs, Brooklyn Children's Museum; and
Eric Siegel, Director, Planning and Program Development, New York Hall
of Science.

It is our hope that participants will provide an even wider
representative sample of the ASTC community. Our goal is to share
experiences, raise common issues, brainstorm solutions and develop
some
sort of published guidelines that can document and inform the field.
An
agenda is attached.

Location: The entire event will be held at Liberty Science Center,
located in Liberty State Park, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Please
refer
to our web site, http://www.lsc.org, for maps and detailed directions.
The nearest airport to Liberty Science Center is Newark Liberty
International Airport (EWR) in Newark, New Jersey.

Registration Fees (if you have not already submitted them): ASTC/NAME
members - $50 US; nonmembers - $100 US by check or money order, please
before May 30, 2004. Registration after May 30 will be based upon
availability.

Cancellation Policy: Refunds will be made if a written cancellation is
received by June 4, 2004. A 20% cancellation fee will be deducted
from
the refund. No refunds will be made after June 4, 2004, or for
"no-shows".

General Meeting Information: Dress is casual. Breakfast, Lunch and
Dinner on Friday, and Breakfast and Lunch on Saturday are included.

Meeting Preparation: In addition to the agenda, you will find what we
are calling an "Expansion Trading Card". Please fill this out and
bring it with you to the meeting. Be prepared to discuss/present
aspects of it.

In order to have a common language for our roundtable, and to fill out
the above-mentioned "Trading Card," please read and refer to the
"Expansion Phases" and "A Collaborative Exhibition Development
and Design Process" documents when completing the card, as well as for
facilitating discussions.

Items to send before you come to the RAP: Please complete the attached
"Registration Form" and "Top 5 Questions" and fax to my
attention.

Meeting Format: Please note that although there will be some formal
presentation elements, these will be minimized and a majority of the
days will be spent in round table discussions and dialogue in order to
allow participants to describe their own situations and discoveries as
well as to truly take the pulse of the field.

Hotel Information: Please arrange your lodging directly with the hotel
of your choice. All of the facilities listed below are within 15
minutes of Liberty Science Center by Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Please
be sure to buy your ticket ($1.50 one-way) and validate it BEFORE
getting on the train. Take either the West Side Avenue or Bayonne
train
- they both stop at Liberty State Park, where you will then see signs
for Liberty Science Center.
