For years, we had a "Taste and Tell" exhibit. We are funded by the water
utility of the City of Vancouver, Washington. The exhibit consisted of 4
water coolers (not really cooled since tastes aren't as distinct in
colder water). Visitors were asked to match the water in each cooler
with its source. Since we are across the river from Portland, Oregon, we
used Portland water (a natural open reservoir system, chlorinated), City
of Vancouver water (from groundwater, chlorinated and fluoridated),
Clark County water (chlorinated but not fluoridated) and filtered City
water. There were definite taste differences. For the most part, people
from this region liked what they were used to the best.

The exhibit was a great opportunity to talk about what goes into water
taste, to talk about groundwater as well as surface water and talk about
chlorination and fluoridation. It was pretty popular and certainly
didn't cost much to put together.

"...Boston tap water is actually quite nice, coming as it does from the
Quabbin Resevoir in the western part of the state."

Alissa's comment reminded me of my first trip to Boston nearly 20 years
ago. I remember thinking the tap water had a distinct cucumber flavor.
Great for cuke lovers, but not so great for me!

Has anybody else encountered specific tap water flavors in their
travels? Do you suppose a blind tap water taste test would reveal any
perceived flavors?
