There is a Segway tour shop inside our historic train station, run by an outside vendor. The store manager gives perhaps a 1-minute lesson/evaluation and lets the riders go on their own. Probably 90% of the riders are responsible, and about 10% are reckless. We have been lucky a Segway rider hasn't mowed down some innocent 1st grader on a field trip. Several times, I've verbally told Segway groups to slow down and not dart in and out of tight entryways or ride the elevators for no reason. All of this could probably be solved with better supervision by the store manager.

I know St. Louis does have a great partner program with Segways. You may want to contact them directly.

The terror of Segways. Here in Washington, DC, our nation's capital and place of mass gatherings (e.g., Glenn Beck, etc.), you can go on a Segway tour of downtown DC -- the White House, etc. It is probably great fun as a tourist, but have you ever been walking down a quiet sidewalk and then, all of a sudden, ten or twelve novice Segway users are coming at you at 12 mph on the sidewalk? Or riding a bike and a swarm of Segways is in the path? I find the Segway an interesting invention -- police officers use it for neighborhood patrols and there are other such practical applications, but it doesn't really work well on the sidewalk or the street.

There's a tour company, here is SF that takes folks around the touristy parts of town on Segways. They're out on the streets with cars, bikes, pedestrians…the full catastrophe, or whole enchilada, depending upon one looks at it. They may have data and information on insurance and accident stuff.

From personal experience, being on a Segway is a total blast. It was so responsive. It was totally cool. Now, it would be fun to collide with an exhibit at 12mph.

Do your visitors have to wear a helmet or sign a waiver? Any help is most appreciated.
