Hi Kyrie,

Last year we had a series of events around Earth Day where we partnered with the San Francisco Giants baseball team to do sustainability events here on site and also as a theme for one of the home games. I've mentioned a few of them below.

Lou Seal, the Giant's mascot, helped do presentations on ocean sustainability regarding climate change and fishing practices- he showed how he was concerned about the San Francisco Bay changing- it was a big hit with kids and families.

We also used an exhibit hall where people were challenged to make sustainable choices by doing things such as sort garbage appropriately into compost, recycling and landfill bins or make pesticide watch cards for fruits and vegetables, do experiments with heat and different types of glass to learn about home repair. Our staff, volunteers and partner organizations helped facilitate the experiences. Each time the individuals completed a challenge they got a stamp on their "passport." When the passport was completed they were rewarded with a raffle ticket to win prizes.

Subject: Sustainability related events?

Hello all,

OMSI has a grant to do eight sustainability-related events between the summer of 2012 and summer of 2014. We're currently researching similar events that other museums or organizations have done. If you have hosted or heard of wonderful events of this kind, please tell me all about them. (Actually, if you know of really lame sustainability-related events, that would be helpful, too.)

To give you a little bit more context, here are some of the criteria for the events we plan to host:
- Target audience: families with children 10+ (primarily English and Spanish speaking families, all events and related programs will be bilingual Spanish/English)
- The focus of the project is on family and community level action here in the Portland Metro area. In particular, all of the public deliverables (including an exhibit and outreach campaign) aim to encourage sustainable decision making by helping people understand how to weigh the social, economic, and environmental impacts of their decisions. Events should encourage people to practice decision making and using skills necessary to make more sustainable choices. Skills could include basic "critical thinking" skills to more concrete skills such as how to plan your bus route.
- The "themes" in the related exhibit, which we plan to mirror in the events, are transportation, food, stuff (consumption and waste), and the home (personal energy and water use).
- Events should have a fun, positive, creative feel about them and focus on how more sustainable choices can have social, financial, and environmental benefits for you, your family, and your community.

Thank you!

Kyrie
