Hello Nikki -

We have been at the heart of education and outreach for the science behind the Marcellus Shale and natural gas drilling (a.k.a., "Fracking") here in Central New York and Pennsylvania. Along with the Cornell Cooperative Extension and others, we have done a number of community forums, media events, teacher professional development, and town-hall-style events that (hopefully) help the public understand the science behind this very, very contentious issue. As Martin said, we've also done a lot to educate ISE professionals and the public in evolution theories and creationism. Dr. Warren Allmon, Director of PRI, published a pamphlet on "Evolution and Creationism" a few years back, initially as a professional development tool for science educators and museum docents to understand the issues, but that now has been adopted across many platforms.

I'd be happy to talk to you about the forums we have done here at the Museum, and also to get you in touch with the folks who directed and facilitated many of the meetings that we have had with the public, the media, and formal and informal educators. I will admit that it has been a very interesting, and bumpy, ride.

Cheers -
Carlyn

Subject: Organizing civil community dialogue about current science issues

ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.
*****************************************************************************

Our community is seeking a neutral setting to learn more about current
science issues and topics

and then engage in civil dialogue, listening to various voices as folks seek
to form their own

perspectives on whatever. We're setting up a series structured around a
presenter for 30 minutes

followed by 30 minutes of civil conversation.

If anyone has experience with this sort of programming, I'll appreciate your
sharing what has

worked well for you and what has not.

gas atoms. I, too, can see the stars on a desert night, and feel them. But
do I see less or more?"
