You've gotten tons of great suggestions. Of the already mentioned, I like:

1. CFL's
2. Compost (worms eat my garbage, too)
3. unplugging "vampires"
4. buy local (get to know a local organic farmer and never eat another
"3000-mile Caesar salad")
5. turn down the thermostat
6. change print margins, but also print less
7. turn out lights - my MIL must know Jonah's mother; "What, you own stock
in Con Edison?"
8. walk, ride a bike, ride a bus, ride a train (my favorite), carpool,
teleconference, anything but drive

Most of these will actually make you money, the best kind of cheap

I'd add:

9. Wash all your laundry in cold - modern detergents do not need warm/hot
water
10. Reuse more and repair broken stuff instead of replacing and buy stuff
that can be repaired when it does break.
11. Recycle more, and make recycling more convenient, so you actually do it
- more bins, easy color codes., etc.

Oops, more than 10, better stop there.
