IR ( non-thermal) is exactly the preferred wavelengths for fibre
communications, and so IF you were using IR LED's and a web camera you
would certainly have a way to bring some pinpoints through a panel and
see them.
Thermal IR is absorbed by glass - it allows a great demo..

IF/when they get the thermal IR "STARS" up on the panel and people can
see them via the FLIR camera, you could bring a thin sheet of glass in
front, and "see" them disappear.. helps make the point that astronomy
uses different wavelengths to see different things, and to see THROUGH
diffrent things. Sometimes seeing what is blocked is the only evidence
we have of whats going on in the spaces of space.

Do you want small pin-points or a larger dot? IR laser diodes are cheap
and could give a finer point and because you would only need the lowest
power (fractions of milliwatt?) the heat may be less of an issue. But
either way or whatever you use test it out on the bench with the vinyl
to see what happens. Or maybe a larger IR LED and then use fiber optic
strands to feed the individual points. But I'm not sure how well IR
feeds thru those strands...

I'm afraid of the heat. Would they damage the vinyl over an 8 hour day?

These FLIR thermacams work in the mid IR range.
