Yes we have a workshop - a nice one too, closing in on 3000 square feet.
However, we started with an enlarged hallway (maybe 10' x 15'- and we were
supposed to keep the center aisle clear since people would go through there.
Most of the museums I've seen that don't have workshops, either end up
borrowing space or have the exhibits people build prototypes at home. We
ended up borrowing spaces from different organizations. It seems that
whether or not a space gets an exhibits shop depends on who plans it and how
thoroughly the exhibits person/people desire that shop. I think some
exhibits people who come into situations where there isn't a shop actually
like it because it does allow them to work out of their home. Those people
only seem to like it if they already have the space and the equipment.

For an article I'm writing about museum buildings and exhibit
development, I'm trying to get responses from people about whether the
museum they work for (or museums they've helped create) have exhibit
workshops (that is, staff-only spaces dedicated to building and
repairing exhibit components.)

You can view this post for context: <http://blog.orselli.net/>

Feel free to respond on or off list, or via the blog comments section.

Thanks!
