I bought a FLIR handheld thermal camera a couple of years ago for £6,000 in the UK (this one: http://www.thermascan.co.uk/assets/sales/b2/index.html).  We found that this base model portable unit (as used by building surveyors, rescue workers etc) was more than sufficient for our needs.  It has a small 2" LCD monitor on the unit, but also a video-out port that we have connected to a 40" LCD monitor.  There are graphics on the screen (a scale on the RHS showing the temperature range in the field of view) and a FLIR logo, but we cna live with those.  It has a number of different false-colour modes, but we've opted ot use the most extreme to get the "predator vision" effect that visitors are becoming familiar with.



Looking on our supplier's website, it looks like there are now even cheaper options.  This shouldn't be a surprise as the solid staet detectors are getting cheaper.  The bulk of the cost now is the lens and the onboard software (which we don't use, but is apparently very clever).



The good news is that this is one of the most popular exhibits in our building!
