The Newark Museum is piloting a vegetable garden in partnership with the
American Heart Assocaition as part of our Generation Fit: Steps to a
Healthier Exhibit. We are working with a charter school and museum high
school Explorer interns to maintain the garden and implement a
curriculum. Next summer we will make it available to visitors attending
our Jazz in the Garden concert series, as well as offer cooking
demonstrations.

Hello lovely science centre folks,

I am curious whether anyone has vegetable gardens on their grounds and
how they utilize them for public programming and events. Do you use
permanent signage for interpretation? What content does it focus on?
What kinds of programs do you run in the gardens with your visitors? Do
you limit hours/access to them? How do you maintain/staff that space? Do
you find it is more popular among certain demographics? Do your visitors
eat the produce at will? Do you have special harvesting times? Do you
use the produce in your cafes?

We are piloting a small Edible Garden this year and are wondering about
turning it into a wider initiative next year. As a result, we are
looking for other examples of what Science Centres are doing.

Thank you so much for your insights!
